Description

After years of living with mysterious symptoms, a young girl from Brooklyn and a Duke University scientist are diagnosed with a disease said to not exist: Chronic Lyme disease. The Quiet Epidemic follows their search for answers, which lands them in the middle of a vicious medical debate. What begins as a patient story evolves into an investigation into the history of Lyme disease, dating back to its discovery in 1975. A paper trail of suppressed scientific research and buried documents reveal why tick-borne diseases have quietly spread around the globe.

I encourage everyone to see this film to better understand Lyme disease and to advocate for the many long term sufferers with debilitating symptoms and conditions of chronic Lyme disease. They deserve compassionate caring doctors, and healthcare and health insurance systems who strive to help them.

This film is more than just a Lyme documentary (though it is the best Lyme film I’ve seen). It is engaging throughout, deeply informative of a complex issue, and strikingly emotional. It is a look at the many ways our healthcare system fails those with complex illnesses, and the fallout that failure causes in the lives of those who are sick. A must see for anyone who steps outside.

I can’t say enough good things about this film. As a parent to two young boys, I found the story of Julia and her dad battling the insidious disease of chronic Lyme simply heartbreaking. This is required viewing for any parent, not to mention medical professionals and policymakers!!

Despite the tough subject matter and consistently more frustrating facts the film drops about the voracious greed and corruption of the healthcare industry, I was more compelled to watch rather than dismiss. What started as a background movie while making dinner, quickly turned to me ordering food and focusing on the movie. The directors commitment manifested in the years she stuck with this story in incredible. And the result is insightful and engrossing. Adding to the experience is wonderful score of the film — poignant and touching without sentimentality. A terrific film that makes you mad about the world but gives you hope that there is hope to be had.
