Description

This effects-heavy installment is the inevitable sequel to one of the more effectively spooky and financially successful horror films of the '80s. The Freeling family is trying to grapple with the devastation wrought by the ghosts and ghouls that destroyed their lives. Steve (Craig T. Nelson), Diane (JoBeth Williams), and their kids, Carol Anne (Heather O'Rourke) and Robbie (Oliver Robins), have been reduced to living in the home of Diane's mother, Jess (Geraldine Fitzgerald) because the insurance company refuses to believe what happened to their house. The Freelings are unfortunately unable to escape patches of unholy ground living in a house that is just as haunted as the last. The evil spirit of the mad cult leader Kane (Julian Beck) has returned in an effort to kidnap Carol Anne. After realizing what's happening, the Freelings call upon the psychic medium Tangina Barrons (Zelda Rubinstein) for help, and are aided by a benevolent Native American spiritualist, Taylor (Will Sampson).

This film is worse than the original Poltergeist. But it has a strong cast, and a creepily haunting performance by the old man who played Rev. Henry Cain. Carol Ann (Heather O’Rourke) is still haunted and now so is her Mom, because, their psychic explains, they are both mediums. Mom and daughtee sense that the evil 19th century cult leader Rev. Cain (for some never really explained reason) wants Carol Ann’s soul. A Native American Shaman, Taylor arrives to help the family battle Cain as does Tangenia Barron. The cast and performances are strong: the plot is muddled. So this film is not quite as scarey as the original, but any time Rev. Cain has a scene things heat up quickly. Sadly, there is not enough of Cain to save the film. ( I seem to remember the old man playing Cain died during shooting.). Nevertheless, this is not a bad film considering the plethora of bad films in this genre.

It’s not quite good as the first one but it still has its frightful moments. Love what comes out of the tequila bottle!

I watched the first Poltergeist when I was 9 and when the clown dragged the kid under the bed I changed my mind about the second one. I might just do it now!

Saw this movie when I was a little kid growing up in the 80s, the movie still gives me the creeps to this day as a adult, but love it! How come we cannot purchase this movie though?

this movie bored me and confused me from the first scene to the last. I will admit there were some jumps here and there but it didnt have a clear plot line. One minute there is a dead guy who wants to take the little girl, the next minute the wife is having odd hallucinations, and then the dad swallows a worm and throws up and alien thing. I strongly disliked this movie. if you want to watch it, watch it on netflix and don't waste your money. If you don't have a netflix well then just take my word for it. In my opinion the poltergeist did NOT need a sequel let alone a third one. Horrible just horrible

I rented this movie being a little skeptical based on some of the other reviews, but I actually loved it! It's nothing like the first Poltergeist… It really dives into the story of why the family is being tormented instead of focusing on trying to get Carol Anne back like the previous did. Neat story line and it definitely keeps you interested. Not a dull moment. Slight re-casting errors don't hinder the movie at all and by the end you won't have missed the older sister.
  • Rent!

I am disappointed that you cannot purchase this movie but only rent it. I won't be renting it therefore lost revenue for the rights holder.
