Description

Separated from his wife Emma (Academy Award and Golden Globe-winner Jennifer Connelly –"A Beautiful Mind," "Requiem for a Dream"), amnesiac John Murdoch (Rufus Sewell – "A Knight’s Tale," "The Illusionist") awakens alone in a strange hotel to learn he is wanted for a series of brutal killings but he can't remember if he did or didn't commit these murders. Indeed, most of his memories have completely vanished, and he becomes the focus of interest for both mad genius Dr. Schreber (Emmy Award and Golden Globe-winner Kiefer Sutherland – TV's '24," "Phone Booth") and sympathetic detective Frank Bumstead (Academy Award-winner and Golden Globe-nominee William Hurt – "Kiss of the Spider Woman," "Broadcast News"). Attempting to unravel the twisted riddle of his identity, Murdoch encounters a group of ominous beings known as the Strangers, shadow-like figures who have collective memory and posses the ability to stop time and alter physical reality through a process called The Tuning. Focusing their minds, they are able to change the size and shape of the material world. Murdoch manages to stay a step ahead of his adversaries as he slowly jigsaws together the puzzle of his past-bittersweet memories of his childhood, his love for Emma, and the key to the murders – while following a labyrinth leading to the Strangers' Underworld.

The theatrical release tacted on an exposition dump that spoils a sizable chunk of the film. Skip it and start on the second chapter.
  • Great Movie, But Avoid This Copy

This is the theatrical cut, which unfortunately starts out by literally telling you what's going on and destroying the mystery of the story. Seek out the Director's Cut, especially if you know nothing about the movie going in. I wish iTunes would have labeled this as the theatrical cut.

But still worth a look for the mash up of noir tropes and science fiction horror touchstones
  • Big promise, no delivery

This movie starts with an interesting premise, feels a bit cheesy but you hang with it. But midway through, you start to sense that this might not be that clever. And towards the end, it's not. You feel a bit stupid as a viewer for sticking with it, and I don't like feeling like I wasted my time.

Wow, we usually like this type of movie but this was one boring waste of a great caste and interesting idea.
