  • A decent freshman effort

This is Noah Baumbach's first film. It's not great, but I found it amusing. He seems pretty terrible at writing endings though. As with several of his films, this one just drops off abruptly at the end.

I went to college at the time this movie was set in and NONE OF US acted like these idiots. Critically acclaimed? No friggin way!

Hilarious, touching, and just plain fun! **In response to another review by Da Smitty: I'm not sure how this film could be "extremely disturbing" to a 4 year old. Maybe the lack of an Asian Midget? Or, perhaps it was the sight of people far more intelligent and eloquent than his father.**
  • Adequate, but not outstanding in any way.

If you type the word "stagey" into an on-line dictionary, I bet you'll find links to clips from this movie. Lot's of good eye excercise (from all the rolling). The only character I cared about was the girl who had the good sense to get out- out of college and out of this picture. Still, not the worst on iTunes for the 99 cents. Oh, and ladies, FYI- men DO NOT ask each other about their daily personal habits...

I graduated from college the year this movie came out and although I moved on after graduating, the feeling of not knowing what the next step in life was going to be was constantly on my mind. The main characters in this movie graduate and keep living the college lifestyle because they don't know what else to do. Although it sounds like serious stuff, this movie is HILARIOUS! It's not slapsticky funny, but subtlely funny. The more you watch it, the more you pick up on the little things...similar to other Noah Baumbach movies (The Life Aquatic...).
  • Not the soccer movie, a 90s indie movie

Please do not give this movie a low review because it isn't the soccer movie with Will Ferrell in it. If you're too dumb to look at the picture and see that Will Ferrell isn't in the movie, then that's your problem and you shouldn't take it out on this movie. This movie was made in the 90s. It's about people who've graduated college but are still living in the college town and trying to figure out what to do with their lives. It's funny in spots and a fun, quirky movie. If you liked the 90s (answering machine jokes lol) you'll probably like this movie.

I had graduated from college a few years before this film debuted; maybe it hit close to home with me and my friends who had moved in together to be, uh, slackers with high aspirations in the 90s. Smartly written dialogue allows this character study to be funny and and poignant, even fifteen years later. A great cast (including Parker Posey, Josh Hamilton, Carlos Jacott, and a small role from Eric Stoltz) carries this smart film from Noah Baumbach. A must see for anyone who ever clung to old habits, unable to move forward with responsibility.
