  • $2.99 will feed a lot of cats

Imagine the cutest Wes Anderson movie ever. Now take away the Wes Anderson. All that’s left is lots of cute, so much cute you start feeling angry and violent — toward cats. So angry that you buy a cat just to tie it up and make it watch this really self-indulgent, mindless thing about two children in their mid-thirties and a talking cat. The talking cat has the best line, when it says, “It just goes on and on and on and…” I have hated my life for the last 90 minutes, but not as much as I hated this film. Especially the parts with the cute wittle itsy-kitty voice. You can either rent this movie or go to the American Cancer Society webpage and give them the $2.99. Your call.

The Future is one of those movies with a hypnotic mood that draws you in. That's not to say it doesn't also have a plot; but what sticks with you is a mood of isolation and yearning. Which is not so say it's a downer -- it's funny and touching, a unique and beautiful experience.
  • Not worth a second of your time

This movie is a total waste of time and rental cost. It consists entirely of uninteresting characters making dumb decisions involving other uninteresting characters. The only involving character is the cat, who is mistreated. You won't want to watch this film if you like animals. Actually, you won't want to watch this film if you like anything.

that was so obscure and so disconnected only the French would like it. And boring.
  • A True Masterpiece

This movie is a masterpiece. It taps directly into human yearning, anxiety and isolation in a way that I have rarely experienced -- Kafka maybe. It is brilliantly written with so many surprising and unexpected poetic gestures. It is so painful and so funny. Very few works of art tap so deeply into this kind of pathos. The little description "When a couple decides to adopt a stray cat …" sounds like a cute little Hollywood cuddly thing. The movie is the opposite of that. Truly inspired. I will watch it once a year for the rest of my life.

Totally uninspiring. Fell asleep in the middle of it. Plot went nowhere.

As difficult as it seems to further demean the flat and bloodless characters in this film, the twisted meandering of the screen play succeeds in completing thier dehumanization. The only warmth in this movie is supplied by Paw-paw, an injured stray cat who longs for the main characters to rescue and love it. So you think you are going to get a little dollop of "feel good" there? Nope. The screen writer has the cat put to sleep when the adopters are late to claim it. All told, this is a mean-spirited film peopled by defeated, self-indulgent characters who drift through the story practicing a chain of petty cruelties.

I used to see your performance art and listen to your music, then I read your stories, and now I watch your movies. I guess I'm a big fan. Everything that you do is special to me and I hope that you keep expressing yourself, making things, and making the world a nice place to be. The stories are so heartfelt and universal. I am a big fan of your work. This movie and the last movie you did were both really great. I like them both -- both are precious and sweet. I don't usually like movies so I wouldn't promise that the normal moviegoer would want to watch this. But for the open-minded moviegoer, I highly recommend! I think it comes down, simply, to the writing. You are a clean and honest writer, and you are fearless in the themes that you choose. I can't wait for your next movie, or play, or whatever you choose to do. I hope you visit Portland again soon.

Ugh! What a waste of time! A shameful grab at your emotions. I *really* wish I hadn't watched it! DO NOT let the plot summary or the critically acclaimed mumble jumble fool you...this is NOT a good movie!
  • I might have liked it if I was a hipster
