Description

In this Golden Globe nominated psychological thriller, Oscar winner Tilda Swinton plays Eva, the mother of the evil Kevin (Ezra Miller). Eva contends with her clueless husband (John C. Reilly) and her son's malevolent ways, as the narrative builds to a chilling and unforgettable climax. Based on the best-selling novel of the same name, WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN explores nature vs. nurture, as Eva's own culpability is measured against Kevin's innate evilness.

I know this is supposed to be an artful take on school shooters but the back and forth narrative was confusing and Kevin was such a....caricature of what a shooter is supposed to be that it was difficult to take the character seriously. They hit the nail on the head with the analytical aspect of his personality and his casual cruelty but then they kept hitting. And also the ending was dissatisfying. Spoilers, I guess...the ending was disappointing too. Your child took so much from you and you HUG them? I don’t get it. It would’ve made more sense and been more satisfying if she was even MORE furious than the mothers who lost their kids. THEY get to deal with their pain with sympathy and empathy. She has to struggle with the aftermath for the rest of her life. Come on.

I realize this movie came out quite a while ago but I only just heard about it a few months ago. It is a little slow moving, but it carries you to a big finish in a curious way. Tilda was a nice touch. Although new to the scene at the time, I loved what Ezra Miller brought to this film. He takes his artistry very seriously and I look forward to seeing more of him in the future.

I don’t understand the reviews that call this movie “jumbled” and “confusing.” It’s a movie that flashes back and forth in time to reveal the progression of Kevin’s psychopathy. Anyone with a brain should be able to understand this. And it isn’t even remotely boring, I was glued to the screen the entire time. It’s an excellent movie with excellent acting and a horrifying climax. If you like psychological thrillers, check it out. If you’re expecting some kind of action movie, you’re in the wrong place.

  • Its about Mental Illness

The only reason this movie is getting 5 stars from me is because it’s an important movie on a very taboo subject more than an entertaining or enjoyable one. Its an intelligent realistic film about what it means to have a child with mental illness that escalates to mass horror. If you care about whats happening in society and the escalating cases of untreated undiagnosed mental illness that eventually raises its ugly head to school shootings then you might want to pay attention. I would not watch this movie for any other reason as it is one of the hardest things I watched.

The acting is very good but this movie is DEPRESSing! The plot is all over the place. If you feel bad when you rent thus movie you'll want to shoot yourself afterwards.

This is a really good and disturbing film. I love the way its told as flashbacks mixed with daily life ultimately building up to the main event. There is hardly any real dialogue in this film so its a true testament to the actors. This ones definitely worth watching.

This film left me breathless at the end. Very well written and acted. Tilda Swinton and Ezra Miller were terrific as a mother-son relationship gone very wrong. Excellent!
