Description

My Man Godfrey is one of the top Screwball Comedies of all time- a story of a wealthy New York family in the 1930's that brings in Godfrey, a destitute and "Forgotten Man" as their butler. William Powell plays the leading role brilliantly, and gives the family a madcap ride they will never forget. My Man Godfrey was the first film to receive Oscar® nominations in all four acting categories, including stunning performances by William Powell and Carole Lombard. Presented here beautifully restored and in color for the first time, this is the definitive edition of My Man Godfrey.

The Legend Films color version is restored and looks spectacular. It looks like My Man Godfrey was shot in color it is done so well. Highly recommend
  • Classic but colorized

Criterion put out a very nice print (complete with an awesome gag/blooper reel!) years ago that was in black and white. This is a classic and still very relevant and funny movie that was shot in black and white. The lighting and cinematography was based on it being in black and white and like so many converts the coloring is distracting and unnatural. That being said it isn't nearly as egregious as older colorization jobs, but it's still inferior to the original black and white version. If you haven't seen it you may be surprised how topical it is after many decades, set during a time of great class disparity and economic downturn. It's sometimes bitter sweet, and often screwball hilarious, but always a wonderfully written and well acted masterpiece.

Normally, I would raise heck with anyone who tried to colorize my black and whites. But seeing how every version of My Man Godfrey I've ever seen has been rough....I'll allow it. :)
