Description

Informant is a fascinating, gripping portrait of Brandon Darby, a radical activist turned FBI informant, who has been alternately vilified and deified. In 2005, Darby became an overnight hero when he traveled to Katrina-devastated New Orleans and braved toxic floodwaters to rescue a friend stranded in the Ninth Ward. Soon after, he co-founded Common Ground, a successful grassroots relief organization. But over the next few years, he began hiding a shocking secret. After two young protestors were arrested at the 2008 Republican National Convention, Darby revealed he had been instrumental in the indictment as an FBI informant. The only film with access to Darby since his public confession, Informant meticulously constructs a picture of his life — before and after the death threats — through interviews and tense reenactments starring Darby himself. Darby’s version of events is accompanied — and often contradicted — by evidence from acquaintances and expert commentators on various points along the political spectrum, posing complicated questions about trust and the nature of reality.

i think better this world is one of the best docs of the last few years, but i don't even understand why this film was made. there is seriously zero new information and production-wise btw is exponentially superior and far more compelling. the only difference is that this is filmed from brandon's perspective - but his entre side of the story was covered in btw. i have no dog in the fight, but just objectively the 2 kids in btw are much easier to believe and seem far more sincere. i really got the feeling that brandon was just making things up on the fly.

I've thought often about this documentary ever since I watched it -- it really stuck with me and I'm glad the director brought in so many voices and perspectives on Darby. The audience isn't pushed into one conclusion but instead brought into a conversation and a puzzle. You get glimpses of Darby's charisma, a wave of his self-aggrandizement -- there are truly disturbing moments and flashes of humor. I can't help but wonder what issue Darby will try to champion next…
  • Not that interesting

The story itself really isn't that interesting. After about 1/2 hour I realized I really could care less what this guy had to say or what he did. He was only tracking 2 kids who didn't know what they were doing. I was expecting a lot more based on the reviews and awards. Disappointing. It's like a cheesy 20/20 reenactment.

This one really took me for a ride -- has the kind of surprises you don't expect in a documentary.

Ok movie. Showing how a self-deceving person with a serious lack of judgement can be influential in the political extremes of both sides in this country. Too bad the Tea party is so influential in the republican party and thereby playing a critical role in the nations ability to do nothing.

the slightly interesting story of a sad guy who wants "to do the right thing" and sometimes does but whether because of ego or chasing someones approval mostly just can't do the right thing. REALLY! THE TEA PARTY! WHAT ARE YOU THINKING!

This was covered extensively by Frontline several years ago. Why would a serious film interview a person like Breitbart?
