  • Missing Monk

I've been digging through my Monk lately, and it's like visiting with an old friend who always makes you smile. The Black Lion London collection is fine, with enough odd additions to mix it up. I wonder if Monk knew that this would be one of the last major recordings of his carreer. As sharp and perceptive as he was, I think he did. I'm glad that he was able to play with his old friend Art Blakey one more time. If you are new to Monk, look for the film, "Straight, No Chaser" by Clint Eastwood for a great overview of his life.

This is part one of Monk's last important recording session. It is just Monk and his piano, and he is at his best. This series (including Volumes 2 and 3) is something every Monk fan should own. "Darn That Dream" is particularly alive and whimsical, and "Loverman" and "Nice Work" are also first rate.
