Amaing classical album. The raga is rendered very well by the maestro. Over an hour of musical journey. Tabla sounds very good too.
  • Is classical music slow and sleepy?

I have seen people who think classical music is too slow and sleepy for appreciating and it is not meant for "chilling out"! What a great misunderstanding. Try this album and see how a raga takes its form in the hands of a great maestro. Mian Ki Malhar is a well-known rainy season raga and when you go through the build-up of "alap, jod, jhala" you get immersed in the mood and the three rhythmic pieces take the journey forward to a scintillating finale. Tabla accomponiment is marvellous. Sometime you get a feeling that tabla is representing the sound of thunder and heavy rain - both fearful and beautiful at the same time! As far as the santoor is concerned, it is hard to describe in words. It rained in our area today and I listened to this album while driving through the rain. It was just ecstatic and energizing. Powerful music!!
  • Music of the rainy season - A Long Walk In The Rain!!

This album has an elaborate rendition of the rainy season Raga -- Mian Ki Malhar. Malhar gives an unmistakable feeling of the rain -- the clouds clashing with each other, the sound of the rain drops, the dullness and confinement created by the rain, the pangs of separation... Structurally, this Raga is very difficult to be played an an open string instrument like Santoor but the effects created by the maestro are just amazing. The tabla accompaniment by Anindo Chatterjee is masterful. For people who love nature and would like to drive around while it is raining, this music forms a great companion. HPR
