other than the funky country rock melody of the edgar winter group of free ride frankenstein is an all time synthe guitar instrument classic that,s a 5 ***** listening rating i,m sure that " The Monster " Horror icon Sir Boris Karloff would certainly have enjoy listening to.

Soulful, rocks out, even a little country (Round and Round). Has it all.

From the opening line “driving along with my radio on, feeling good” setting the stage for one of the all time classic and great albums of the 70’s. Every song is a good one, no fillers. Although Edgar Winter has released other music through his career, “They Only Come Out At Night” is by far his “mona Lisa” so to speak. His brother Johnny had more of a successful run maybe, but this is simply a great record to drive to or just put on and chill to. You can’t go wrong!
  • A couple classics, a couple throwaways

This album is a mixed bag. When they're good, they have a classic sound with occasionally great guitars. Free Ride and Frankenstein are 70's standards. They come across a little like Steve Miller Band and a little like The Eagles. On exactly half the tracks, however, his vocals fail. Those songs feature weak and generic vocals where he comes off sounding more like Teddy Pendegrass. You can tell as soon as the singing starts if it's one of the inspired tunes or one of the flops. This album has stats that mirror my review. 5 keepers and 5 throwaways. There's four 3 star songs, one 2 star song and the rest are throwaways. There's just not quite enough hits to warrant giving this album 5 star standing.

Extremely dissapointed with itunes. Bought Alta Mira and it skips right from the start. The sad thing is I cant get in touch with anyone to fix my problem.

Frankenstein has been my favorite song nearly my entire life. I was just 5 years old when it was released and bought the album when I was 9. This album is a complete listener from beginning to end. I have never tired of listening to this album for 34 years, now. The songs on this album run the gammut from calypso, blues, instrumental, ballad... The combination of Ronnie Montrose's guitar, Dan Hartmann's and Edgar Winter's song writing, and the myriad of instruments that Edgar plays just really comes alive on this album. I can't say there is a single other Edgar Winter album that I really like, except a song here and there, but this album struck pure gold. Frankenstein and Free Ride made the album charts, but Alta Mira and Autumn could have just as easliy been big hits. They're that good. I recommend this album to anyone that enjoys great musicians and great song writing.

Don't know about the whole album, but Frankenstein and Free Ride are INCREDIBLE works of art (Plus I saw Edgar play them live as part of Ringo Starr's All-Star Band at Bethel Woods). Even if you hate everything else on the album, you should buy these two songs.

At first I thought the music playing was good, but did not know there was no one singing after I bought the song. not to satisfied.

This brings back sophomore year for me in high school. After being introduced to Edgar Winter on "White Trash" the year before, it was truly embarrassing to hear him come out with this purely commercial sweet stuff, lacking any soul, heart, rhythm etc. It a perfect example of the trash FM was to become. F--stein is nothing but a silly noise generator. The whole album is 180 degrees from his real potential, the epitome of early seventies sellout. Check out "White Trash Roadwork (Live). Sounds like a totally different artist.

My little girl, who turned three a couple of months ago, heard "Frankenstein" on the radio for the first time as I was taking her to school the other day. As the song ended she said, "Sometimes it is scary, but I like it. Play it again." I explained that it was the radio, and I couldn't play it again until we got home. As soon as we got home, "Play the scary music again, Pater!" The songs on this alblum are 12 times older than she is, but still connect. Bravo.
