The quality of this recording is fine despite what others may say and Mravinsky's interpritation of the work is second to none, most notibly in the march in the 4th movement where you can almost picture shostakovich giving stalin the finger.

Before buying this, just know that it's not a year 2000 digital recording. If you can get past the "poor" recording quality, you will hear one of the great performances of the Symphony #5. No conductor knew Shostakovich better than Mravinsky, and no group can truly carry the intentions of the symphony better than a Soviet-born and trained group such as this.

Mravinsky was the conductor of the Fifth Symphony's premiere in 1937, and is responsible for exposing much of the Western world to Shostakovich. It is entirely inappropriate to tare this album "one star" because of a few coughs, as it is a live recording. In fact, Mravinsky's may be the most legitimate of all interpretations because of his closeness to the composer.

Even for $4.00, this album is not worth the frustration at having to listen to coughing and sneezing throughout the most beautiful parts of this symphony. Poorly recorded and very mechanical in it's presentation. I have listened to it once and it is not worth listening to again.
