Reviews

  • This is a good album but...

I've been a huge fan of T-bone ever since I first grabbed his album Criminal Under My Own Hat years ago. It was a random grab in a music store because I was looking for something new and I immediately became pulled in. He does incredible work and has had an incrediblye career. That being said, I was a little disappointed by this ablum. It's not that it's not a good album, I just expected something more out of T-Bone. It seems to be missing a level of strength and depth that I'd come to expect from previous works. If you're already a fan of T-Bone buy this album. However, if you're new to his stuff I would recomend picking up True False Identity First, then Criminal Under My Own Hat, then this one. Not a bad album, but not his best work. On a side note, I'm also a huge fan of Tom Waits (including bootlegs I've got 40 Waits albums) and I just don't see what you guys are talking about. Tom is very different with an entirely seperate emotional texture.

I don't remember how I was introduced to T Bone several decades ago, but I thank the music gods that it happened. He is a unique talent, with songwriting and performing skills which are as magnificent as his ability to produce great music. Once again he has come up with an "A" in a world of commercial music which is dominated by a glut of "C, D and F" quality work. Tooth of Crime is definitely not for everyone, nor is it your run of the mill album of love songs, and in fact may be so off the wall that some people may never understand what is going on, but buy it, do a little research on the concept of the work, and enjoy a completely original piece of music.
  • The Musical Bones of Los Angeles - Clattering. Beautiful.

To the outsider, Los Angeles seems all glamour, celebrity and silicone lift. But to those who have lived there, and made music there, it is a place of dark brooding and moody beauty. The second largest city in the nation is home to a community of musicians unlike any other. These are the thick-skinned, devoted musicians who have seen slick pop acts come and go like jets from LAX. The city knows fame and cranks it out methodically. But underneath the lusty glow of L.A., there sings a beautiful, jangled rebel song that is unmistakably L.A. When I first heard this album on KCRW FM's iTunes feed, I immediately recognized the musical bones of Los Angeles. Disjointed, rebellious, incredibly beautiful. T-Bone Burnett is one of Los Angeles' most active producer-auteurs. A man who has panned for musical gold, in Los Angeles dry creekbeds. A man whose blood contains equal parts palm tree, smog, love, vintage guitar, sex and trafffic jam. In other words, listen to this album and understand what Los Angeles does to the aspiration of musical genius - here presented in intoxicating hues of brown, purple, black and orange. Just like the Los Angeles twilight.

I admit that I was not eagerly awaiting this album nor am I familiar with Sam's work however I really enjoy this album. Almost every track I could picture being used for a soundtrack in a movie at some point aside from the obvious adaptation. The production on this album is excellent and I found this collection very inspiring and refreshing.
  • How many T-Bone's are there?

I am shocked that I would be the first to write a review of T-Bone, but alas. Thsi is a buy-without-hesitation. My partner says "strange beyond words". I say GENIUS, must have. This guy has done everything and he must be listened to. AND he is married to Sam Phillips (at least I think they're still married) and you just got to love that. This album is in Nick Cave territory, maybe. All I know is that I love it. BUY THIS
