A Modern Classic

This is Tommy Flanagan's most swinging and hauntingly beautiful album. The tempos are ideal, the trio is effortlessly inventive and supportive, and the tune selection cannot be improved upon. He jumps in with high energy on Raincheck and Caravan, while older standards like Willow Weep for Me feel fresh in his hands. His solo on I'm Old Fashioned is a master class on taste and spontaneity. And he shows a talent for picking lesser-known material — Voce Abuse is a simply gorgeous bossa nova that deserves a wider hearing.
