A solid if uneven debut

Clay Walker's first album has some gems in it. Namely, "Dreaming With My Eyes Wide Open", "What's It To You", "White Palace", and "Live Until I Die". But most of the rest of the album plays against the cheery notion of the songs I mention. The album plays with both the sorrowful endings of relationships, but also the wide-eyed naïveté that happens at the beginning. If the songs were organized differently it might have made for an album made to show a snapshot of love. But as it stands, as a whole it is uneven and conflicting, but most of the songs stand on their own as good listens.
