If you already love Peter Apfelbaum's Jojodi Brightness, Luminous Charms or any of Don Cherry's post-Ornette work with Old and New Dreams, Multikulti, Mandingo Griot Society, Hassan Hakmoun or Codona 3 - then hang onto your heart when you listen to this the first time. The version of "Until the Rain Comes" especially, on this album is not only extended but expanded in feeling, complexity and improvisational depth. All the way through the concert, the mix of AfroBeats, Reggae Riddims, what I think of as EuroBeats and deep progressive Jazz improv is in perfect balance. As a bonus, the aura of plain unalloyed life-joy that Don Cherry always seemed to project permeates the whole thing and keeps this polite audience ready to bust out. Serious "Live" ambience. Don Cherry is now only with us in his wide and deep library of music, but I hope Peter Apfelbaum has not stopped with It Is Written. Music such as this should go on and on.
If you're not already familiar with Don Cherry and/or Peter Apfelbaum, start with this one.
