  • Before Hammerstein, There Was Rodgers and Hart

Richard Rodgers' genius lies in the fact that before the signature style of Rodgers and Hammerstein, he had a string of successful shows with Larry Hart, and Pal Joey was a step beyond the musical comedies of the 1930's. The title character is not sympathetic, but he is multi-layered. However, what's important here is the score, and it is beautifully performed. Check out Patti Lupone as the sophisticated Mrs. Simpson ("What Is A Man?" and the shows big hit "Bewitched.") Bebe Neuwirth has a ball as the journalist probing the thoughts of Gypsy Rose Lee in "Zip." Vicki Lewis, always a delight, also delivers on this CD as Gladys Bumps. Rodgers and Hart obviously had a ball creating a parody of lousy night club acts of the era. Check out "Chicago," "That Terrific Rainbow" (Vicki Lewis) and "The Flower Garden of My Heart." Peter Gallagher is the impish Joey who has a romantic moment with "I Could Write a Book," but his cynicism prevails in "You Musn't Kick It Around" (with Vicki Lewis), "Happy Hunting Horn," "Do It the Hard Way," and the title song. "Babes in Arms" and "The Boys From Syracuse" have also been revived with new recordings like this one.
