I was introduced to Shara's music back in 2006 when her name was mentioned among Sufjan Stevens and Colin Meloy. "Bring Me The Workhouse" stands out as one of my favorite albums to this day. In fact, my fascination with that album made it difficult for me to dive into subsequent My Brightest Diamond releases. I would always try, but then find myself returning to what had eventually become very familiar territory. I just couldn't shake "Golden Star" and "Gone Away." This week I stumbled across a review of new music from Shara. I wasn't aware of a new album on the way. Upon hearing the first few seconds of "Pressure" I was sold. "Lover Killer" and "I am not the Bad Guy" sealed the deal. It's so refreshing to hear carefully crafted pop music, lyrics sealed with meaning and a dynamic voice full of control. Not one of these songs is without an element of subtle surprise. "This Is My Hand" gracefully expands upon the seemingly limited notion of what pop music can really be.
