    I was at the first live performance of this work by this ensemble. And to the writer above, these singers are a "choir"--that is what choir meant at the time, an ensemble of concertists, with the possibility of doubling ripienists if desired. Rifkin met with initial opposition (in 1981), but he was always right about this.

  • Interesting but not as breath-taking as with a choir

    I've never heard this work performed by such a small group. I think it's an interesting version and there are many bonuses to using soloists only rather than having a whole choir. The singers are often better prepared and better directed because they are more exposed. But this version just doesn't have the same effect on me as hearing it performed by a full choir and orchestra. Whenever I hear "Gratias agimus tibi" and especially "Dona Nobis Pacem", I always get goosebumps. The building of each section and instrument on top of each other is just amazing to experience. You don't get that with this recording. Also, the pronunciation is a little strange. I feel that the "ch" on excelsis is a little harsh. I'm not saying this has to use Germanic Latin pronunciation (thought that's what I hear in a lot of recordings) but whatever they are doing here is a little strange.

    It's definetely one of the best and most unique recordings of B minor. It's done in a baroque pitch with only five soloists singing the entire piece. It's strikes with the beautiful simplicity and wonderful ensemble. I am sure it will be appealing to any music lover!
