SCARS&BORDERS // TURKEY-KURDISTAN // A war gesture & Shakira

2014-08-01 2 0 Vimeo

The work is a video essay around the issues of historical memory and identity. It is composed by: - a video of an old deaf-mute Kurdish man evoking through his body language some of the atrocities related to the Kurdish-Turkish conflict. The video focuses on the relation between language and image, addressing as well the theme of the un-speakability of war, especially in a context where Kurdish culture and tradition has been systematically repressed. - a video of 2 nomadic Kurdish kids from Caucasus which settled in a remote area of the Kurdistan region in Turkey, close to the border with Iran. The kids sing a very popular Turkish song called "Seni seviorum" (I love you). Meanwhile a Turkish Military helicopter oversees the landscape in search of PKK militias. The video reflects about the infiltration of Western culture within traditional Kurdish society, in a context where Kurdish people have been historically prevented from manifesting their own culture and from speaking their own language.
