October 14, 2017 BINGHAMTON (WBNG)-- Employees of Home Depot in Johnson City came together to spruce up the Father Sullivan Parish Center in Binghamton. The building, more than 80-years-old, used to be a convent for St. Paul's Church. Father Jon Werner, Pastor of St. Mary's and St. Paul's Churches Binghamton said now the building is used as a food pantry, clothing bank and the upstairs is currently used for Sunday religious school programs. Father Werner says through all of its use, it hasn't been fixed up. "It was in need of disrepair," said Father Jon Werner. "We have religious education programs here, and it needed painting sprucing up. It hadn't been done in many years." "The kids are going to benefit," said Home Depot Customer Service Representative, Linda Denucci. "They're going to be in a nice bright classroom, it's going to give it a fresh outlook." Denucci said she enjoyed volunteering, especially since it involved giving back in Binghamton, where she grew up. "A fresh coat of paint goes a long way," said Denucci. The crew worked on three different rooms. Organizers say in addition to a brighter space for children, some of the space will be used for meetings to plan housing for local veterans. Home Depot employees said they've been active in giving back. This project was in tribute of September 11 Day of Service, a national initiative to promote positive times, while never forgetting one America's worst days. "You get it back ten fold when you help other people," said Denucci. "They stepped right in, bringing in the ladders, the paint, and they stepped right in," said Father Jon Werner. Now he says the volunteers may have inspired him to do more fixing up within the center.
