John 2:23-3:21 When Nicodemus came to Jesus in the night, he came because he wanted to know more about this rabbi who had developed a reputation for being a miracle worker. Jesus treats Nicodemus to a fundamentals class. John uses the literary technique known as the "discourse" and presents the conversation as a systematic teaching. Notice the order. Regeneration/New birth (vvs. 3-11) Eternal Life through Faith in Christ (vvs. 12-16) Judgement and condemnation (17, 18) Works of Light (vvs. 19-21)
