Grandmalina Cookies Ingredients 3 ¼ cups flour 5 drops lemon juice 2 ½ teaspoon baking powder 5 drops vanilla ¾ cup Crisco 3 tablespoons of sprinkles 4 eggs 1 tablespoons of sugar ¾ cup sugar 1 egg white Instructions 1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. 2. In large bowl, mix together flour and baking powder. Set aside. 3. In the bowl of an electric stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream Crisco and sugar until well blended, 1 to 2 minutes. Add eggs, vanilla extract and lemon juice. 4. With mixer on low speed, gradually add flour, scraping down sides of bowl, until smooth. 5. Cover your work surface with some plastic wrap and lay your dough on top. Place another layer of plastic wrap on top, then roll out dough to about ¼ inch thick. 6. Brush the entire dough with egg whites. Sprinkle sugar and sprinkles. The more sugar, the sweeter the cookie. Using a juice glass, cut shapes out of the dough and place on baking sheet. The shapes don’t have to be full circles, you want to use all of the dough. Grandmalina wouldn’t leave any scraps of dough. 7. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until golden. Additional notes: My grandmother made these cookies for every holiday. I think a lot of Italians in her community had a variety of this sugar cookie. This recipe is so easy to make since you don't need to worry about the shape of the cookies. Every single one is different and like a lot of old recipes, there isn't any waste. Every piece of dough is used. I use a mixer to speed up the process, but this can easily be done by hand. Grandmalina did it that way.
