Janne Eraker and David Arthur Skinner with Cute - the third of 10 singles from the groundbreaking tap dance album Movements for Listening! Find the music here: https://www.janneeraker.com/movements-for-listening.html In this duo's take on the old jazz tune Cute, Eraker is dancing the part of the drummer while Skinner on piano delivers everything else, and their interaction moves along at whirlwind speed! The groove is an obscure, but swinging 5/4, and if you listen closely you’ll recognize some brush-sounding moves in the tap dance, a reference to what Cute is originally famous for. The tune is over so quickly that you might need to hear it back a couple of times before you can get into it. In fact, this was recorded when the recording session was officially already over, just wondering “how fast can we go?”... Movements for Listening This album is a wild exploration of sound by Janne Eraker and friends, with borderless worlds of music, widening the horizon and moving outside of all boxes. The ambition of the project was to find ways to use tap dance as percussion in a variety of musical styles, genres and collaborations, and to make a state of the art album recording of this. Eraker went to extremes to try different sounds, textures, material, shoes, dynamics, concepts and, of course, rhythms! Sometimes it’ll be hard to know what’s tap dance and what’s not, because the players get so close in timbre, texture and sound. There’s both composed and improvised music, and music that is based on a standard jazz tune, score, groove or melody. There’s tap dance on wood, metal, bubble wrap, sand, in water, with different types of shoes and with bare feet. Eraker plays on a collection of taps hanging from a rack, like a percussionist playing a carillon, and wooden taps bound together in her hands, like a flamenco dancer playing castanets. All of this is also documented in a series of videos, to make it possible to see how the music was created. Eraker has a group of stellar musicians with her on this project: Knut Reiersrud, Ivar Grydeland, Michaela Antalová, Harald Fetveit, Anders Kregnes Hansen, Hans Martin Rundberg Austestad, Juliana Venter, David Arthur Skinner, Roger Arntzen, Vegar Vårdal and Kristoffer Lislegaard. This resulted in 10 recordings of 9 duets and 1 trio. The ten singles are released monthly, while the vinyl double album will come out on the release concert on November 3. About David Arthur Skinner David Arthur Skinner is a jazz pianist, bandleader and composer, who specializes in swing jazz and stride piano. He has released three solo piano albums based on these genres, namely Diagonal Jazz (2013), Cubistic Boogie (2015) and Skinner plays Skinner (2017), in addition to the duo album Look Both Ways (2022) with the drummer Magnus Eide. Skinner is interested in atypical time signatures, as well as other ways to tease and confuse his audience. He has absolute control over the groove, all the while overlaying it with asymmetrical melodies and polyrhythms. Skinner also performs (usually in a regular four beats to the bar) at his own monthly jazz club “Café Society Oslo”, where the best swing dancers in town gather to dance to the music. About Janne Eraker Janne Eraker is a tap dancer based in Oslo. She has roots in many places; born in Germany, raised in Norway, educated and started a family in the Netherlands. Eraker is fascinated by the sound of tap dance, and has worked a long time to create all kinds of music with it. Her work spans from improvised concerts to choreographed dance pieces, collaborating with a wide range of artists. In 2022 her trio One Small Step released their first album Gol Variations to critical acclaim. Eraker is the first tap dancer to be recognized as a musician in the Norwegian Jazz Forum, and the only tap dancer in Norway to work full time as a tap dancer and artist.
