My guinea pig, I named Benji.
He was chocolate brown with short, shiny, sweet smelling fur.
Squeak squeak as I pass his cage.
' Morning Benji, how's my favourite boy to-day? '
I lifted him out of his cage to play, train him, I stayed with him, had fun all day.
For his treats he would sit up and beg, thank me with a squeak and crawl up my leg.
He sat on my shoulder, nibbled my ear.
His love was so innocent, it caused me a tear.
A tear of love and happiness, which changed one sad day.
I left him with my sister-in-law and boarded the plane,
for sea, sand, sex and a fun packed holiday.
From the moment I left, Benji chose his death.
He refused to eat, drink and play was now a long lost salvation on this earth.
It didn't take long for Benji to die.
I guess he tried to follow me into the sky.
Little did he know, I was to return.
He gave himslf no choice, lay himself down to die.
My love for Benji will be for the rest of my life.
I am so sorry your heart was broken and was laid down to die.

Deborah Ashdown

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/the-loss-of-benji/
