Bay of Pigs – Military: The Invasion That Failed<br /><br />This video provides a military analysis of one of the most disastrous covert operations in Cold War history: the Bay of Pigs invasion of April 17, 1961. Just three months after taking office, President John F. Kennedy authorized a plan conceived by the Eisenhower administration and the CIA to overthrow Fidel Castro's revolutionary government in Cuba using Cuban exiles.<br /><br />The narrative follows the military execution of Operation Zapata. A brigade of approximately 1,500 CIA-trained Cuban exiles, Brigade 2506, landed at the Bay of Pigs on Cuba's southern coast. Their objective was to establish a beachhead, rally popular support against Castro, and eventually seize control of the government. However, the operation was plagued by critical errors from the start: Kennedy canceled crucial air strikes that would have neutralized Castro's small but effective air force; the landing site was chosen for its remoteness rather than tactical advantage; and the expected popular uprising never materialized.<br /><br />The video reconstructs the three days of fighting that followed. Castro personally commanded the Cuban armed forces, deploying over 20,000 soldiers, tanks, and artillery against the isolated exile brigade. Cuban air force jets, including British Sea Fury fighters and American T-33 trainers, sank most of the brigade's supply ships, leaving them without ammunition, food, or reinforcements. The final blow came at Playa Girón, where the surviving exiles were forced to surrender after running out of ammunition. More than 100 invaders were killed, and nearly 1,200 were taken prisoner, later ransomed back to the United States for $53 million in food and medicine.<br /><br />Through military maps, archival footage, interviews with veterans of both sides, and analysis by military historians, the video examines the tactical failures, intelligence miscalculations, and political constraints that turned a planned victory into a humiliating defeat.
