Description

Learning a language is a complex and multi-layered process, which no computer can automate, but the study of Latin also involves extensive memorisation, which is where Liberation Philology Latin can help. Liberation Philology Latin drills you on Latin vocabulary and grammar, through a continuous multiple-choice test that's instantly available wherever you have your phone and a free moment. Your answers are immediately confirmed or corrected, and reinforced through repetition. • Vocabulary: 200 levels of basic vocabulary, each testing the translation of 10 words between Latin and English. Additional sections cover the vocabulary of Book I of the Aeneid in sequence (148 levels), intermediate vocabulary (300 levels), and Cicero's In Catilinam I and Pro Caelio (82 and 66 levels). Interspersed among these are cumulative levels reviewing what has been learned earlier (giving a total of 898 levels). • Nouns: Tests your ability to parse and decline all classes of Latin nouns. • Adjectives & Pronouns: Tests your ability to recognise and decline Latin adjectives, pronouns, and pronominal adjectives. • Verbs: Tests your ability to parse and conjugate regular and irregular Latin verbs. • Participles: Tests your ability to recognise and decline Latin participles. A further Reference module allows you to review the vocabulary word-list and paradigms.

Either you know it or you don’t! Nouns, verbs, adjectives, and vocabulary are all there. Card set for CLC vocab sets would be nice. I use this app a lot! Thank You.

I do this like others would do video games. It is an easy way to learn Latin.

Really good for studying AP Latin. Great structure in that it is based off of Latin literature.
  • Serious limitations & counter-intuitive

This app is only good for vocabulary, with the proviso that the total number of words is about 2,400, whereas you’d really need about 8,000 to read Latin like the newspapers. The selections strike me as arbitrary: the only vegetable is celery, the only silverware is spoon, no items of clothing whatsoever, no food of any kind except apple and the aforesaid celery, no beverages, no trades and professions except carpenter and actor, no seasons, no weather, and only a handful of animal species. And way too many words about warfare. Once the software had been developed, how difficult could it have been to load up a few more thousand words? However, the biggest problem with this app is that the way to learn cases and declensions is counter-intuitive. For example, you’re given an infinitive and then you’re told to pick, say, “3rd pl perf subj pass” out of four verb forms. Or “fut pass neut voc sing” with participles. That doesn’t give you a feel for the language—you’re spending half your time just trying to decipher the code. Much better to give us something like “they should have been called,” which you then can get really quick at picking in Latin. I wrote about this to the developers, and they responded that it would be too difficult to do it like that, and that the app works fine as it is anyhow. I beg to differ, and I’m deducting an extra star for the apparent disinclination to take reasonable feedback to heart.
  • Fantastic app

For those of you looking to have an outstanding resource for all your Latin needs, this is the app for you! Not only do you have the best reference for all your grammar paradigms, but you also have a way to test yourself on them. This is my one-stop shop for polishing up on my declensions and conjugations. This app is well worth the price and many time more.
  • Great for memorizing

It let’s you memorize all the different inflected parts of speech and a ton of vocabulary by having you choose a correct answer out of four options. Would recommend for someone studying Latin.

I find the verb practice to be particularly helpful, though I wish the vocabulary was cumulative
