This book is a sleeper that would make an excellent movie. The perspective changes and the “story within a story” kept me totally engaged. King ruled this book. Loved it and the other book club members loved it too!

An SK departure from the usual macabre. That’s why I wanted to read it. As all of his books—- it did not disappoint. Strong character building makes this story one for the ages.

As always, King’s writing a pleasure to read.

The best book of SK’s I have ever read. This will be a a book I will never forget and enjoying again in my older years. Thanks Stephen King. What a ride it was indeed.
  • Thriller of a book having some trouble finding out what it wants to be.

The first third of the novel was original and exciting. The story pushes forward on a collision course with an event that keeps you riveted along the way. The middle section slows down quite a bit and is filled with war flashbacks that seemingly have no place in the storyline. The last third picks back up again as the main character is on a mission, marching toward what is likely a disastrous end. King is a masterful author and there’s no question that the character development, writing and story concepts are top rate. Unfortunately, this book felt like three separate stories threaded into one. It wasn’t entirely natural or organic. In the end, I would still recommend the book and if they made this one into a movie like many of King’s other books I would absolutely watch it. Good read that could’ve been great.

I think that Stephen King is the best writer that I have ever read. And yes, I have read Shakespeare. That man, King, is a genius as far as I’m concerned. He is talented beyond anyone’s expectations and believe you me, I have read a lot of novels in my 78 years of life. I have read at least 80% of all of the novels that Stephen king has ever written and I would say that this is the absolute best! Thank you Stephen King for a week of the best “summer “ (pun intended) reading I have ever done!
  • Junk Food

A compelling enough story. I eagerly consumed the whole thing like a greasy plate of junk food. I was hoping for some insider cool info on the life of an assassin. Instead it felt like a story written by an out of touch old man who did his research by reading Wikipedia for 15 minutes. And some details felt very out of date: who still carries photos in their wallet? The characters’ use of technology seemed unrealistically out of date. But I willingly read the whole thing. Now I feel the need to go on a reading diet with a bit more artistry to it.

First half was slow reading. Overall, not too bad except for the political references.
