Description

One of the country's greatest urban transportation systems is examined with over 300 drawings, photographs and accompanying textual descriptions for a period spanning over 100 years.

In addition, the following film shorts are included at the end of the book:

1.  3rd Ave. El (1955) - A color film about the operation of the Third Avenue Elevated Railway in New York City before the line was discontinued.

2.  Manhattan Landmarks (1954) - A combination of two 'News Magazine of the Screen' stories. The first clip shows the discontinuation of the El line in New York. Very nice footage here, it shows the very antiquated line and it's track, which really ran too close to buildings. The second clip documents the history and the wonders of the the Statue Of Liberty, from construction in Paris to its unveiling by President Grover Cleveland.

3.  Arteries Of New York City (1941) - A black and white film that illustrates transportation corridors leading into and out of New York City, and efforts at transportation and infrastructure planning.

and

4.  The Story Of A City: New York (1947) - A black and white film that shows the historic and economic emergence of New York as one of the world's largest cities, and its relationship to the rest of the United States.
