Description

Sea monsters, monarchs, ogres, and sorcerers: Salma Hayek and John C. Reilly star in this breathtaking Baroque fantasy from the visionary director of Gomorrah. Based on three spellbinding stories of magic and the macabre by 17th-century folklorist Giambattista Basile, Tale of Tales unleashes a barrage of mind-bogglingly gorgeous and fantastical imagery as it brings to life the (mis)adventures of three kings: in the kingdom of Darkwood, the King (Reilly) and his Queen (Hayek) attempt to conceive a child through very unusual means; meanwhile, in Highhills, the none-too-bright monarch (Toby Jones) marries off his daughter to brutal ogre while developing a strange obsession with breeding a giant flea; and, the sex-obsessed crown of Strongcliff (Vincent Cassel) is in for a shock when the woman he falls in love with is not quite what she seems. Overflowing with surreal, dazzling surprises, this intoxicating cinematic spectacle is a delirious excursion into the dark heart of fairy tales.

A hell of a movie that every medieval fairy tale lover should watch. Not for the weak though

Not for kids! But for adults with a sense of whimsy and able to follow the intertwining stories, a real delight! Great performances, sets, and costumes. Handel and Gretel meet Game of Thrones....

No amount of set design or art direction could breathe life into this dead exercise in futility. It’s not a morality play; it’s a painfully disconnected rambling that just played me for my money. The film is pointless and uninspiring, unless of course the viewer is under some sort of narcotic influence. The professional “critics” rave over non-existent substance, praising the film for attempts it never makes. It’s just vile, violent, and vacuous. I couldn’t help but notice, too, that even in the fantasy genre, non-whites don’t exist.
  • Nothing redeeming here!

I guess I'm just old fashion. I look for beauty, goodness and truth in things, especially in a fairy tale. This movie had none of that. No chivalry, no moral to this story, just lies and deceit. Definitely not worth 7 bucks.

Don’t pay attention to haters. If u don’t like this movie than its probably too deep for you. Yes it is insane but very entertaining. I liken this to a movie like the fifth element

Good grief, I don't know that I can effectively express the complete waste of time and money this movie was... So bizarre that the cinematography was beautiful, the costumes were beautiful, the locations were beautiful but the movie was trite and the direction was execrable. Awful, awful, awful

Wait, what just happened? Three stories, each more banal than the last without any real connection, and then it kind of just ends? Oh boy. And the acting is bad too. Yeah, pretty terrible. Can I have my $ back?
  • neither a joke of jokes, nor an saga of sagas

The tale(s) lack substance, but are moderately interesting. On the other hand, the constumes, sets, and scenery are sleek and stylish.
