Everytime black films giving a depiction of baby america racist always talking bout division but then say something like "yaa people had to suffer but america is still great"
  • Very difficult film. Ultimately rewarding and necessary.

The movie made me think HARD about things that are HARD to think about. I stayed absolutely glued to the screen for every frame. Ultimately, the juxtaposition of what appeared to be a utopian civilization build on absolute hell makes this film an ironic beautiful and ugly masterpiece.

Very impressed by the performances and the extra depth given to this portrayal of the historical legend, Nat Turner!

They did Nate Parker wrong. They used an old case he was acquitted of to distract from this film. It was a great film; well-directed but the narrative of a slave revolting against white supremacy scares the powers that be so this film was drowned out by “controversy”. They’d rather see a white man come to the rescue like in 12 Years A Slave smh.

This feels less like an exploration of a breaking point and rebellion and more like an opportunity to serve the director's ego. Historical facts are played down or altered to make Turner less of a troubled mind and more of a pure hero aware of his future historical reputation. Turner, while famously eloquent and intelligent, was also somewhat insane believing god was talking to him through natural phenomenon. Women and children were not spared in his rampage and he did not simply turn himself in to save lives, he was caught hiding out by a farm. All of the vain flourishes distracts from the more complicated real life man and his revolt. It cheapens the lives lost black and white. It often appears manipulative and staged. There are some smart and effective shots and everyone is definitely giving it their all, but it's hard to not feel that the final product is also exploitive...ending in one of the cheesiest angel from heaven effects committed to film.

This movie is an inspiration of hope for any who are the victims of oppression and inequality. It captured the essence of the disparity of those times which eventually lead to slave uprisings. I could not help but think of Patrick Henry's declaration "Give me liberty or give me death" during the American fight for independence ". I gave it 5 stars because they don't have anything higher.
