Description

The Kilchers live off the land, spending the limited months of summer and fall gardening, hunting and fishing for food, gathering supplies from the land and preparing their animals' safety in preparation for surviving the harsh Alaskan winters.  Most live completely off the grid, with no running water and no electricity - and are proud of it.

Good show. Entertaining. I like it. But it's too bad that the world has to be full of so many professional liars. Can't people just say what's what without lying about it? These seem like nice people but discovery doesn't have to keep saying that they are depending on killing this or that animal for their survival when, obviously, they can survive just fine. The narrator keeps saying stuff like, "if they don't kill animal X, they will go hungry during the long winter." I think most viewers can see it's a bald face lie. It just gets annoying after a while and it's unnecessary.

These are hardy people who work hard and smart to embrace the life that they love. It's easy to admire their determination as they face one challenge after another with intelligence and grit. Their work follows the unbending dictates of a land where the long and brutal winter yields only briefly to a summer that teems with life, natural beauty, and days of abundant sunlight. The only aspect of the show more inspiring than the raw beauty of southern Alaska is the deep commitment that these people show to one another and the meaning that they create by embracing the traditions and community that they honor as a way of life.

I just want to let all of you watchers know that the Kilcher family live a few miles outside of Homer, Alaska, which is a summer tourist town. Look it up. The way they out right lie on this show about somethings cracks me up!

Good show, but your a bit over the top when you drive an 8k snowmachine 30 miles one way to catch hares, the money you spent on gas alone would have bought some fine beef. Overall 2 thumbs up, good family show.
