Tremendous album. Would very much like to see the 2011 re-issue with "Nightmare" and "Fog" bonus tracks.

Good Lord, how did they pull this off after Starfish? This and much of their material is for people who can calm themselves for a relaxing listen. If you can do that, you are rewarded and your thoughts taken away from this physical world like a good book can do. Nick Drake does that to me as well. Kilbey's lyrics are top notch. Deep and delivered with cool emotion Itunes is lacking some great Church albums as of this review.
  • Tragically overlooked

This is the Church's best album, recorded whilst the band was beginning to disintegrate, and the only one to feature drummer Jay Dee Daugherty. From the first track to the last, there is not a throwaway song to be found. I was fortunate enough to see them play this album in it's entirety in 2012, and it was worth the 6 hour drive. A must have work.

This is The Church's best album closely followed by Heyday, and they are as far apart as any of their albums can be...This one is cinematic, immaculately recorded and performed, and the songs have a great majestic (almost icy at times) tone to them....Kings, Paradox, Old Flame, and Dome are my faves.
  • "Astonishing" is right

"Astonishing" is the perfect name for this mid career masterpiece from the Church. The sonically rich yet more literary and heady followup after the triumph of "Starfish." Hints at the Space-Rock explorations yet to come from this adventurous Australian quartet, most recently delivered in the dense and trippy "Untitled #23." This is probably the best kept secret in the Church's back catalogue. Enjoy!
