  • Tragedy wrapped in melancholy and topped with a smile

There are few albums that manage to pull off the kind of lyrical/musical contrast as Speckled Bird. Most of the Choir's work is deeply layered, but the thing that's always struck me about Speckled Bird is the way it evokes multiple (and often conflicting) emotions in a way that resonates rather than creating dissonance. "She brushes true love with thistles, her garden grows..." Not as ethereal as some of their earlier work, or as earthy and grounded as later albums, Speckled Bird has always left me convinced that Steve Hindalong was aiming for downright depressing lyrics, while Derri Daugherty (vocalist) just couldn't put himself in a bad mood. It's a great effect.

Speckled Bird was The Choir's first release after leaving Word Records, unless of course you count Kissers and Killers (the independent release that eventually became about 2/3rds of Speckled Bird). The first thing that was immediately noticeable was how much noisier it was in comparison to Circle Slide. To this day, it remains their noisiest and darkest release. The actual song, "Kissers and Killers", is probably the most aggressive thing to come out of the band during their now quarter-of-a-century spanning career. But of course, no Choir record would be complete without the whimsical love songs ("Like a Cloud", "Gripped", and "Love Your Mind"). If you are looking for an introduction to this band, this is as good a place to start as any, especially if you suspect you would prefer their more rock-based side.
