Folks think I can fix or build most anything <br />Yeah, I have that reputation its true <br />But its really just their misconception <br />Others tend to think higher of me than I do <br /> <br />They compliment me on my abilities <br />And the workings of my mind <br />But if I was some kind of genius <br />Here's the first thing I would design <br /> <br />Some sort of time machine <br />I don't know.. a box.. or perhaps a ray <br />Something to take me back years, or months <br />Or maybe even just a day <br /> <br />Back to elementary <br />That's where I would start <br />Back to meet the pigtailed girl <br />That would later own my heart <br /> <br />We went to the same grade school for a time <br />But we never knew each other <br />I'd go and introduce myself, tell her to remember me <br />Because one day, she would be my childrens mother <br /> <br />Then fast forward through some years <br />Change a little, add or lose a thing or two <br />Soon it would be time for us to meet again <br />And here is what I would do <br /> <br />Yes, I'd be working in that bar again <br />But alcohol would not touch my lips, of this I'm sure <br />I'd just be fixing that punching bag machine <br />Broken or not, smiling and waiting for her <br /> <br />We would marry, have our children <br />And I would never leave her side <br />Just show her everyday how much I love her <br />No hurt, no heartbreak, no teardrops ever cried <br /> <br />But that's not how it happened <br />There is no back in time <br />I can't fix everything I broke <br />Not with my hands, not in her heart, not in my mind <br /> <br /> <br />(2012)<br /><br />Michael Ernst<br /><br />http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/back-to-1969/
