My heart is an empty apartment. <br />The rooms chill with silence, <br />Suffocating my hopes of ever <br />Finding someone who wants to rent. <br /> <br />Footprints litter the floor, <br />Outlined in the dust. <br />Revealing not one set but many of those <br />Who have tread on it before. <br /> <br />I took down the sign, <br />Turned off the electricity, <br />Put all my feelings in storage, <br />Locked the door one last time. <br /> <br />Days and weeks passed, <br />The state of my heart in constant decline. <br />I couldn't risk the upkeep, <br />Previous renters had left it too fast. <br /> <br />Sometimes you find what you were looking for <br />During the times you aren't searching at all. <br />Your references checked, your credit was good, <br />I was shaking with trepidation when you turned the key in the door. <br /> <br />First the electricity came on, <br />The rooms filled with warmth <br />Memories of footprints faded <br />As you became a tenant of which I was fond. <br /> <br />You began moving in, one piece at a time, <br />A toothbrush in the bathroom, <br />Your favorite food in the fridge, <br />The bed you moved in was mine. <br /> <br />Fond turned to love, renter to buyer, <br />The key to my heart the ring on my finger. <br />This apartment is sold, it belongs to you <br />Only Heaven can take me higher.<br /><br />Sydney Daniels<br /><br />http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/empty-apartment/
