Sydney Daniels - Other Side

Where I stand
The grass grows lush and long,
plain beneath my feet.

Across the way
Meadows roll with splendor blooming
Beauty explodes before my eyes.

I wonder then
What would it be like
To cross and stand on the other side?

With nervous heart
The first step slow
Then faster, running to see.

Ahead of me
The beauty I dream of
Draws closer, obscuring reality.

I am there
Living in the fantasy
Unmindful of the consequence for living my imagination.

I become aware
As splendor becomes ordinary
I find weeds mixed in the flowers.

Where I stood
Comes alive for me again
Glittering green, calling me home.

Memory awakens homesickness
A longing for plain lush long grass
The comfort and contentment of the familiar.

So I return
To find the grass shorn
Withered and browning from my lack of care.

Lamenting my neglect
Attempting to rebuild and revive
Against a storm of mistrust and wariness.

How to convince
That long lush plain grass to grow again?
Proving ever so much harder than to first coax to life.

Where I stand
I can see the meadow bursting
And curse the mirage that brought about my wreckage.

Sydney Daniels

http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/other-side/
