I believe John Adams will come to be known and remembered as one the the greatest composers of his time. I first got hooked on his music when I saw a TV performance of his opera "Nixon in China," which dealt with no less momentous an event that the opening of the People's Republic of China to the West.I also like "Shaker Loops", but if you're new to Adams, check out "Two Fanfares for Orchestra: II.Short Ride in a Fast Machine" on this CD." It's good!
  • A perfect introduction to a GREAT American composer

If you are not familiar with the works of John Adams, this album is a perfect introduction. It contains a nice variety of works, including one true minimalist work (Common Tones,) an orchestral work culled from his most famous opera (Chairman Dances,) his most performed work (Two Fanfares,) and a unique recording of one of his more obscure works (Christian Zeal.) The recording of Christian Zeal also contains some extra-musical elements that would be difficult, if not impossible to replicate in a live performance, truly adding to the unique nature of this album. In addition, all of the music on this album is tonal and extremely accessible, making it a perfect gift for the music appreciator in your life. John Adams is truly one of the most interesting figures in American music today. If you enjoy witty, crafty, intelligent music that's just plain fun to listen to, you need to put this album in your ears NOW.

John Adams displays his most famed works in this album, especially the Chairman Dances. As a master of minimalism, his music even evokes a spiritual effect at times. Though an unusual style, this is the forefront of contemporary classical music.
