Scripture is full of imagery related to water. From the beginning of Genesis with God hovering over the waters of chaos lovingly speaking creation into existence to the end Revelation with the river of life flowing from God's throne bringing healing, water is found throughout Scripture. In the Old Testament, waters are analogous to evil and chaos in the world. In a world of both order and chaos, beauty and brokenness, good and evil, the Holy Spirit, symbolized by water in Scripture, is the source of cleansing and life. As we celebrate three baptisms today, it's a chance to be reminded that Jesus is the water of life and the one we can put out trust in. To do so means we can both work in joyful obedience and rest in His loving presence.
