In research two different approaches will boost and suppress different aspects of a signal in a complementary manner. This complementarity applies at all scales of disciplinary divisions from the finest distinctions within, say, neuroscience, to the divide between a purely aesthetic and completely hypothesis-driven appreciation of a phenomenon.
