Description

In his controversial masterpiece The Great Dictator, Charlie Chaplin offers both a cutting caricature of Adolf Hitler and a sly tweaking of his own comic persona. Chaplin, in his first pure talkie, brings his sublime physicality to two roles: the cruel yet clownish “Tomainian” dictator and the kindly Jewish barber who is mistaken for him. Featuring Jack Oakie and Paulette Goddard in stellar supporting turns, The Great Dictator, boldly going after the fascist leader before the U.S.’s official entry into World War II, is an audacious amalgam of politics and slapstick that culminates in Chaplin’s famously impassioned speech.

  • I appreciate the intent, but...

That's a big set-up for a good speech. I appreciate the intention, and it probably had some potential to make waves in 1940, but it's like a 30 minute set up for a punchline. The comedy is not so funny... and I LOVED "City Lights." I'm not a total snob. I would have been better off finding the film's finale speech on YouTube, and calling it good.

This is one of the greatest films I have ever seen. The Barbers speech at the end made me cry his words can still be applied today.

so true, this is one of the reasons why chaplin was a genius of his time and any other time and why I respect him so much. He went after hitler before we did.

This film is worth every penny. His speech is hauntingly timeless; much like James Stewart's in Mr. Smith Goes To Washington. Both are lessons in humanity and should not be missed.
