The Gold Rush

The Criterion blu-ray edition of The Gold Rush includes both the 1942 cut offered here, and a reconstructed version of the original 1925 silent, with a newly-recorded adaptation of Chaplin's score for the rerelease. The disc also incudes several interesting special features on the making and restoration of the film. These are really different films. Difficult to know why Criterion is making only the 1942 version available for streaming. It takes seeing both to understand how Chaplin was viewing the material when he looked at again in 1942.

Charlie Chaplin was a master and pioneer of filmed physical comedy. This version however also includes his voice instead of the original title cards. While it may have been seen as an improvement to audiences in 1942, Charlie Chaplin’s speaking voice has not aged well. Imagine Montgomery Burns giving audio descriptions for over an hour.

This is the sound version, NOT the original silent version.

Such a classic film....Must buy for any Chaplin fan or movie fan in general
