Description

Charlie Chaplin’s comedic masterwork—which charts a prospector’s search for fortune in the Klondike and his discovery of romance (with the beautiful Georgia Hale)—forever cemented the iconic status of Chaplin and his Little Tramp character. Shot partly on location in the Sierra Nevadas and featuring such timeless gags as the dance of the dinner rolls and the meal of boiled shoe leather, The Gold Rush is an indelible work of heartwarming hilarity. This version is a new restoration of the original 1925 silent film.

Incomparable. The film Chaplin wished to be remembered by, and rightly so. The hilarity has a hard edge, and a poignancy that sidesteps the sentimentality of some of his other films. If you purchase Criterion’s dvd or Blu-Ray, you get both this, the original version of the film, and Chaplin’s 1942 revision, which is substantially shorter, eliminates the inter-titles, and replaces them with unnecessary narration. If you’re buying from iTunes, this is the one to get.

Sweet, funny, and thrilling by turns, The Gold Rush is a go-to movie for converting those who see silent film as wooden, stodgy, or out-of-date. It is a timeless comedy about endeavor, hope, and the search for love in a forbidding setting. Without ever hearing his voice, the audience is caught in the Little Tramp's spell, rooting for him while still laughing at his slip ups. The Gold Rush is an immortal film, as relatable today as it was in its smash 1925 release.
