First, I'm a serious and knowledgeable cinema enthusiast since 1995. I've seen this 1931 Charlie Chaplin masterpiece several times. Charlie Chaplin, the great comedy artist and perfectionist, created this incredibly sweet, graceful, beautiful love story, with The Tramp falling in love with a blind flower girl and his efforts to raise money for an operation that will cure her blindness. This is extraordinarily powerful storytelling, combining comedy and pathos. I agree with most critics of this film. "City Lights" has one of the greatest endings in the history of cinema. This is a must see film for any serious cinema enthusiast and a very worthy addition to any serious film collection!

If just for two scenes alone, the hilarious boxing scene and that final freeze out which Gene Siskal called the greatest ending in movie history. Chaplin's masterpiece. And of course his great score. Now ranked 11 on the AFI top 100 films of all time. Previous Sight and Sound winner as greatest of all time.

If, for some reason, you need proof that Charlie Chaplin is a genius, consider this Exhibit A. One of the best movies ever, featuring what may be the most poignant ending in film history. Brilliant.
