Description

When cargo-plane pilot Frank Towns (Dennis Quaid) and co-pilot AJ (Tyrese Gibson) are sent to evacuate the staff of an oil exploration operation that has been shut down, they become stranded in the Mongolian desert with no hope of rescue. The mismatched team of survivors must put aside their differences and attempt to build a new plane--The Phoenix--from the wreckage of the old one, in hopes of flying back to civilization.

Before I first saw it, the trailer looked good. The movie not so much. Looking at it, it could've been a lot better.

Please give us the original version. This is a cheap knock-off.

Ok, here we go again. Re-hashing the same ol' dilemma: quality remake or justa fake? I don't know, can we get more choices? I do know the cast played well together, creating an enviable bond most never experience, overcoming differences of race, color, faith and capacity these sojourners remove the outer cambiam-layer of life to get down-n-dirty in a hot-n-sweaty, lack-o-water (and comic relief, unfortuneately) unforeseen environment and circumstance. It is one of the few honest modern action films. Portraying the characters as real people: unrefined, selfish, spasmatic, and ultimately courageous gives the viewer an appeal of rare and fresh fruit not often found in our fly-infested bowl of smelly quick-flick choices.
  • Get the original movie. This is a very poor remake.

Don't bother with this. Get the original movie starring Jimmy Stewart.

Hugh Laurie is in this! iTunes, I can't believe you didn't add his name to the Cast List! But considering it's a blimish on his resume, I can see why he'd hide it. It's still a pretty good film. The film's comedy is sparser than water, but the tension and suspense is where it wins. The acting is good, but nothing special. The SFX are moderate but few. The writing is questionable, it's okay. The directing isn't visible, so I can't comment on His performance. The overall story is one that could last less than an hour to tell, but they stretch it out to the length presented. The film lays some factoids down on our bums, such as a "dancing compass" which is pretty cool. And that without a compass, a person will walk in circles forever. The ending is kind of predictable, and the little moments during the credits are nifty, but a little immature, especially the one with NASA. Overall, this is a film worth the rent. It's no where near great, but as a mildly fun spring flick: watch it.
