Description

Hypertension is one of the most widely studied and controversial conditions of the past few years.

The fact that numerous observational studies have proved that both cardiovascular mortality and morbidity are closely related with the presence of uncontrolled high blood pressure values has converted it into one of the vascular disorders that must be considered in all adult patients presenting at a routine medical visit.

This condition has been associated with a high risk of coronary events, cerebrovascular disease, heart failure, peripheral artery disease and end-stage renal disease.

Currently available information has caused hypertension to be considered a major risk factor for cardiovascular disorders and other associated conditions.

For this reason, in this work we present a review of basic concepts such as those that contribute to maintaining normal blood pressure values, in addition to the major causes related with hypertension, its most common complications and current therapeutic approaches.
